2} Printer: 

A printer is a device which get input from computer in the form of text or images and print it in the form of paper in usually format. The first computer printer was invented by Chester Carlson in 1938. The printing process is known as electrophotography and the paper which is print is known as Xerox copy.

Types of Printer are:

A} Impact Printer:

1} Daisy wheel Printer: A daisy wheel printer is a specific type of mechanical impact printer. It produces letter-quality type. These type of printer invented in 1969 by David S. Lee at Diablo Data Systems. The printer uses a metal or plastic disk containing each of the letters, numbers, and other characters it supports. It has a rotating wheel and are printed onto the paper by means of hammer and print ribbon. This results in a great deal of movement and noise during the printing of documents, so  printing is slow(less than 90 cps).Daisy wheel-printers cannot print graphics, and in general they are noisy and slow, printing from 10 to about 75 characters per seconds.

2} Dot-Matrix Printer: This is the cheapest and the noisiest of the computer family and are relatively fast. They are useful for low quality carbon copy. The founder of Dot-Matrix printer was Robert Howard, founder of Centronics Data Computer. The speed is usually 30-550 characters per seconds(cps). It is also known as Impact Matrix Printer. It has a print head, which moves forwards and backwards. Today, dot matrix printers are utilized far less than they used to be due to their low quality images and slow print speed when compared to ink jet printers and laser printers.

3} Line Printer: Line printer is a high speed who print's one line at a time. It prints 300 to 3000 lines per minute. Usually they have been replaced by high speed laser printer, they are still used in some business as they are low cost and have the ability to print on multi-part forms. Large computer system used Line printer. This technology comes in the year 1930. The main disadvantage of line printers are that it does not print graphics.  

A) Drum Printer: In the drum printer it consists   a drum which has number of character and numbers which consist on the drum. It consist small and capital alphabets and special symbol which are printed when a hammer pushes on them. It consist many hammer. In this technology the thing to remember that all the character are not printed at the same time because it has the hammering technology. It also not able to print all types of styles or symbols because in this the character are predefined. Because it has the hammering technology so it are also noisy.

B) Chain printer: It is also the part of line printer and known as Train printer. Which prints one line at the time. As the name implies it has the chain which consist of the character. In this technology the chain will be available in 48, 64, and 96 character sets. This chain is placed between thee paper and the hammer when the hammer pushes the letter the character will be printed on the paper. The total number of hammers will be equal to the number of print positions. Because this has hammering technology it will also noisy in the nature. The main advantage of this printer compared to the drum printer is that it prints 400 to 3000 lines per minutes. IBM introduces the first line printer IBM 1403 in the year 1959.

4} Teletypewriter: It is also known as TTY or TeleTYpe. It allows alphanumeric character to be typed in and sent, usually one at a time as they are typed, to a computer to print. It was developed by the Teletypewriter. It was introduced in the early to mid-20th century. Teletype mode is the capability of a keyboard, computer, application, printer, display, or modem to handle teletypewriter input and output. The Model 15 was a popular teletypewriter launched in 1930 and was one of the mainstays of U.S. military communications, especially during World War II. Teletype mode is the capability of a keyboard, computer, application, printer, display, or modem to handle teletypewriter input and output. Many modems today continue to include support for a TTY interface.

B} Non-Impact Printer

1} Thermal Printer: This printer uses heat to transfer image or text to produce on paper. This type of printer was invented by Nobel Prize winner Jack S. Kilby an American Electrical engineer in the year 1965. A thermal printer uses components like Thermal head, platen, spring, controller boards.

There are two types of Thermal Printer:

A)  Thermal Wax Transfer:  It is a digital printing machine. These type of printer uses Wax-related ink to the paper. The printhead of a thermal printer melts wax-based ink from the transfer ribbon onto the paper when cool, the wax is permanent. Thermal transfer printing requires a printer that works with a thermal transfer carbon based ribbon and media which is chemically transferred onto a label's substrate when heat is applied, hence the name "thermal transfer." Thermal transfer ribbons can be many different formulas and colors, so the user is not limited to black print.The big advantage of these type of printer over dye transfer printer s are that they don't require special paper and they are faster.

B)   Direct Thermal: A printer that print images by burning dots onto coated paper when the paper passes over a line of heating elements. Early fax machines used thermal printing. It means it does not use ribbon for printing an image. Direct thermal printing is popular in applications such as mailing, small parcel delivery, retail and the food industries where most items are stored away from heat and sunlight, and the expected life of the label is less than 1 year.

2} Laser Printer: Laser printer uses focused light of beam to print an image or text on the paper. When a document is sent to the printer, a laser beam "draws" the document on a selenium-coated drum using electrical charges. After the drum is charged, it is rolled in toner, a dry powder type of ink. The toner adheres to the charged image on the drum. When the paper passes through the printer, the drum is given a strong negative charge, which allows the toner to transfer and stick to the paper. The result is a clean copy of the image written on the paper. Laser printers typically have a resolution of 600 dpi (dots per inch) or higher. Personal laser printers are sufficient for printing an average of 200 pages per week. IBM introduced the first laser printer in 1975 for use with its mainframe computers. In 1984, Hewlett-Packard revolutionized laser-printing technology with its first LaserJet, a compact, fast, and reliable printer that personal computer users could afford.

3} Ink-Jet Printer: Ink-Jet Printer are one of the most common use printer used today for personal use. It prints by spraying streams of quick-drying ink on paper. A typical inkjet printer prints with resolution of at least 300 dots per inch. Some inkjet printers can make full color hard copies at 600 dpi or more. The ink is stored in disposable ink cartridges, often a separate cartridge is used for each of the major colors. These colors are usually Black, Red/Magenta, Green/Cyan, and Yellow (CMYK). As inkjet printers are more affordable than other types of printers, they are commonly used as home and business printers. There are certain disadvantages for inkjet printers. The print head is less durable in most cases. Inkjet printer ink is expensive and can potentially dry up, causing not only wastage of ink but also blockages within the printer. The concept of inkjet printing was first developed in the early 1950s and by the late 1970s inkjet printers could reproduce digital images generated by computer.
